Giving back to the community and helping those in need is an important area of emphasis in the Berkshire Local Schools, including Ledgemont Elementary School, which is proud to participate in the Pennies for Patients campaign sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The annual campaign supports life-saving blood cancer research around the world and support services for cancer patients and their families. Ledgemont hosted a kick-off assembly on Friday, May 17, 2019, which featured a presentation from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on different types of blood cells and how they are affected by cancer, as well as real-life examples of children who have benefitted from donations towards life-saving cancer research and care. Students also learned about real-life heroes such as medical researchers, doctors and patients, and how they could be a hero simply by collecting spare change from families and friends to donate towards the campaign. During the week of May 20th – 24th, Ledgemont hosted themed Dress Up Days to raise awareness for the campaign, which included favorite hats for “Hats Off to Lincoln!” on Tuesday, 5/21, fancy clothes for “Worth Every Penny” on Wednesday, 5/22, and any clothing which starts with the letter ‘P’ for “P is for Penny” on Thursday, 5/23. Students can receive individual prizes based on the amount of donations collected. Congratulations to the students at Ledgemont Elementary for taking the opportunity to be a hero and make a difference in the lives of children!
