AP Chemistry Students Conduct Sports Drink Analysis

AP Chem Spectral Analysis of Gatorade

From professional sports leagues to youth athletics, sports drinks can be found at nearly every athletic event. Students in AP Chemistry at Berkshire High School recently conducted experiments to analyze the properties of several popular Gatorade sports drinks. Using spectrophotometers, students ran a spectral analysis to collect percentage transmittance data of FD & C dyes. A spectrophotometer is a device which measures the intensity of light in a part of the spectrum that is emitted by a specific substance. After collecting the information, students created a graph to identify the concentration of blue and yellow dyes in the Gatorade sports drinks. In addition to learning key content area skills, students gained valuable insight into the properties of popular food items. Stay tuned for future updates on student learning at Berkshire High School!
