Burton Elementary Students Get Creative and Competitive with Fairy Tales Unit

Burton Elementary Kindergarten students recently completed a literature unit on Fairy Tales, which went above and beyond traditional lessons with competitiveness and creativity.  Students were first introduced to several versions of a variety of tales, including,  Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Cinderella, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Students learned about story elements, including characters, character traits, settings, and events.  A great deal of time was spent on retelling and answering comprehension questions about the stories.  The classes then performed the stories, creating costumes, props, and settings.  Students wrote their own fairy tales and shared them within their classes.

A March Madness bracket was created, as the stories went head-to-head, outlining interesting facts about each story in the effort to determine which one was the favorite among students.  After a long three weeks of competition, by a score of 33-14, the kindergarten favorite fairy tale was Goldilocks and Just One Bear, a modern version of Goldilocks in which she is all grown up and Baby Bear crashes her uptown apartment!

We finished off the unit by dressing as our favorite Fairy Tale characters.  In all, a fun and creative time was experienced during the recent Fairy Tale unit.
