Creative and Instructional Restaurant-Style Project Based Learning Opportunities at Ledgemont

Ledgemont students in Mrs. Sivillo’s kindergarten class recently spent some educational time incorporating real-world experiences in the entertainment and customer service industry, by developing their own restaurant names and businesses. Transforming their play-area into their own restaurants, students worked in groups to create and design their own business names, menus, pretend food items, and cash registers. They practiced many reading skills through the creation of their menus and many writing skills as they wrote down orders pretending to be waiters. For math, they practiced counting dollars and adding menu items together. To conclude their activity, they hosted a "live" restaurant with "specials of the day." Students actually used real food items from their menus and invited the teachers and staff members to place orders “to go” on their lunch breaks. This lesson served as a great learning experience for all and a great project to promote creativity and team building. Way to go Mrs. Sivillo and students, for using real-world Project Based Learning opportunities for equipping our youngest learning with valuable critical thinking experiences.
