Community-Based Learning Opportunities Include Scavenger Hunt for Resources

scav hunt

On Thursday, October 7th, students from Mrs. Moore’s and Mrs. Heiman’s 2nd and 4th period classes, participated in their first Community-Based Learning field trip, a scavenger hunt in our local Village. Such Community-Based Learning opportunities help students demonstrate independence and self-advocacy, engage in social interactions, identify community resources and participate in leisure activities to ultimately transfer learned skills into a student’s environment. For this quarter’s opportunity, students were given clues and worked with each other to locate 12 important resources within the Burton Square. Once they located all 12 resources, students were then responsible for taking a picture of the establishment and writing down the name of the location. The finished product will be a PowerPoint Presentation of resources in their community to share with peers. Despite the particular day being a bit cold, students were able to enjoy a warm visit at Coffee Corners after all their hard work! Congratulations to the staff and students involved in this endeavor.
