Speech Classes Read to Burton Elementary Students, Practice Public Speaking Techniques

Sam C.

Students in grades 9-12 currently taking a speech class instructed by Mrs. Lynn Hunter began the first semester by working on important techniques such as expression, voice, inflection, and pitch while presenting to an audience. To help them practice public speaking in front of an authentic audience, the students recently visited Burton Elementary School to read children’s books to kindergarten and first-grade classrooms. The selected children’s books included The Dot by Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld, Steam Train, Dream Train by Ronnie Randall, True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, and The World Needs More Purple People by Kristen Bell.

Through this successful first attempt at public speaking, students recognized the importance of their delivery and an awareness of the needs of the live audience. The interactive experience was greatly enjoyed by both student groups, and opened the door for additional opportunities, as Burton Elementary Principal Mandy Randles and classroom teachers invited the Speech class participants to read to the elementary students again in the future.
