Berkshire has a new athlete for a sport never offered here before. Freshman Rebecca Porter is the one-man swim team. For the past eight years, she has been swimming on the Solon Stars club team. This year, Porter finds herself practicing with the Aurora’s team at Hiram College’s pool for Berkshire. Competitive swimming requires the obvious of knowing how to swim. The strokes required are butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.
Porter wishes competitive swimming at Berkshire would take off. At this point, without an actual coach or a place to swim, it would be impossible. It was hard for her to find a team for liability issues; luckily, she is able to practice with the Aurora team. She says, “It was kind of a stretch having me allowed to practice with them.”
Dedication, says Porter, is really up to the swimmer. She said, “My one friend Broc is an amazing swimmer, a freshman too, and believe me he practices all year round. She has another friend, Austin, while another great swimmer, only swims during the swimming season. Although, true with most sports, Porter says, “The more dedication you have, usually the better you become.”
Porter’s first high school season is playing out quite well for her.. At Salem invitational, Porter placed high. She said, “I placed 3rd overall in my 200 yard freestyle out of probably 40 or 50 some kids.” Porter hopes to qualify for districts this year.
-For my pictures, it was a tri-meet at the Spire Institute. She placed first in both her events, 200 IM (individual medley), and 500 freestyle.-
