BMI Screening 2011-12

Body Mass Index is a required screening for Grades K, 3, 5 and 9. Parent letters with a FAQ sheet attached were sent home with elementary students in their Thursday folders on December 8th. On December 9th I discussed BMI and handed the papers out to the ninth graders during Ms. Hess's English classes.
The law that mandates BMI screening also allows parents to opt out. Parents that want to opt out are to sign and return the Parent letter as soon as possible so that their child will not be included in the screen.
I plan to do BMI measurements (height and weight) for 9th graders in PE classes on Tuesday 1/10 for first semester students, and on Tuesday 1/31 for second semester students.
On the mornings of Tuesday 1/24 and Thursday 1/26 Kent State Nursing students will come to Burton Elementary to assist with measuring students in grades K, 3 and 5. They are in their Community Health clinical rotation. Their help with this project last year was a benefit to them as well as to us!
