Schools: Berkshire Jr. / Sr. High

Berkshire's Clubs Support The Community

by Stefan Tompkins

February 02, 2010

When it comes to community service, the many extra curricular organizations of Berkshire Jr. /Sr. High School know how to make an impact.  Through numerous counts of selflessness and the will to reach out, our school displays its effort to benefit the community of Burton.

Many of our organizations here at Berkshire Jr. / Sr. High School, including: Project Love, Student Council, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and Interact, make it their main goal help out the community in the ways they can.

Project Love sets its goal on trying to get the students involved in the community.  Some ways of involving themselves include the Christmas Giving Tree which supplies gifts to children in need.  Also, seniors who might not be able to afford prom are given support from Project Love.

Student Council also benefits the community by sponsoring a destitute family every Christmas.  Also, coats for kids is a way that student council reaches out to children in need of coats, gloves, hats and scarves.  In the past, caroling has been part of the student council agenda and is planned to become part of the Christmas spirit again in the future.  Seniors are aided on the road to college by receiving help from student council with scholarships.  The annual talent show held at Berkshire Jr. / Sr. High School raises money for scholarships.  When prom season comes around, students who possibly could not afford to attend prom, are sponsored by student council as well.

National Honor Society makes it their job to put on the annual blood drive in the large gym at the high school.  This is not only a student based blood drive because community members are given a chance to donate blood as well.  Basically, when the community asks for help, NHS makes it their priority to help.  Recently with the tragic 7.0 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the National Honor Society is raising funds which will be donated to the American Red Cross for the Haiti Relief beginning Monday, Feb 1st, 2010.  Also, all of the NHS members have provided multiple hours of community service in order to be inducted, seeing as service is one of the four needed qualities to be inducted into NHS.

Interact impacts the community by helping the elementary school when needed.  Bell ringing for the Salvation Army is also a way that Interact helps out.  At the high school, recent plastic bottle recycling tubs have been placed in the hallways and paper recycling bins are now located in every classroom.  Needy individuals in foreign countries are benefited by receiving donated glasses.  Also, the pancake breakfast is a big factor on how Interact serves the community.
