On Tuesday, January 19, 2010, second and third graders trekked from Burton Elementary to the junior/senior high school stage to participate in a special performance coordinated by Mrs. Hull’s Theater class.  The dual purpose of this activity was to (1) foster an appreciation of theatre in elementary age children and (2) a final exam activity for the high school Theater class.

The class chose, directed, designed and performed two short one-act children’s plays. The first was “The Fairy Godmother’s Assistant” about a smart and capable young girl who takes over while the Fairy Godmother is away and solves problems using common sense, and the second was a reader’s theatre version of the Dr. Seuss tale “Daisy Head Maisy”  about a young girl’s unusual predicament.

In between acts Mrs. Hull’s students organized theater-based activities including costume, makeup, improve, pantomime, and voice stations.  Here children could learn a little bit about what goes into putting a play on stage.  Big kids and little kids alike had fun with these activities.

A special thank you is extended to the second and third graders, their teachers, Mrs. Ducca, and Ms. Burzanko, Mr. Reedy, Mrs. Sabol, and Mike Garling for allowing the high school Theater class to share our art with you and hopefully inspire future actors and crew for the Berkshire stage.
