BE Primary Wing Celebrates Earth Day

by Mary Jo Maxwell

April 22, 2008

Teachers in grades K-2 have been spending time discussing Earth Day with their students.  These discussions have covered the basics of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  A variety of projects have been completed.  Ms. Reedy's class recently wrote thank-you letters to the earth.  Mrs. Maxwell's class colored pictures of the earth and created wreaths using their hands with tips to save the earth on them.  Many students have been picking up trash on the playground during their recess time.

A second grader proudly holds up his finished product

All the classes in the Primary wing participated in the Great Grocery Bag project.  Heinen's in Chardon donated 200 brown paper bags to the elementary teachers.  Each teacher in grades K-2 had their students decorate a bag.  The bags had pictures of the earth or nature on them, along with tips on how to help keep our earth healthy.  The students did a FABULOUS job putting on the slogans, creating an illustration, and coloring it neatly.  Most of the bags had Burton Elementary written on them.

Hard at work spreading the message

Do projects like this make a difference?  Well, on Earth Day, Mrs. Ambrose in the elementary office received a phone call from a Heinen's customer.  He wanted to thank the students for helping make people more aware and providing the illustrated bags.  Our belief is that these projects do make a difference...and every little bit helps!
