Troy Elementary had its annual Science Fair and it was huge success once again! The fifth and sixth grade students participated as a culminating activity to a scientific method unit combined with their regular science instruction in their respective classes. Christopher Kostiha, who teaches the sciences, initiated, organized, and set the parameters for the projects. The students entered projects in three categories: individual, partner, and family. Twenty-six judges were summoned to evaluate the projects and first, second, and third place medals and mylars were presented in each category. Parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends were in attendance as the Troy Elementary gym hosted a capacity crowd.
Students had some creative and inventive projects and were expert scientists when it came to demonstrating and explaining their hypotheses, procedures, data and conclusions. The students are to be commended for their excellent effort and work! The science fair not only provided the students with an opportunity to showcase their projects but for us to assess their mastery of key science content and standards. Students and parents should be very proud as they exhibited great skills and it appears we have some future scientists among us!
Troy Elementary would like to extend a special thank you to all of the judges for their time and talents in judging the projects. Judges asked many critical thinking based questions of the students and this allowed for the use of inquiry based learning in a setting outside the classroom. Mr. Kostiha chose judges from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. They included educators from our district and other school districts in Northeast Ohio, community business members, the medical field, law enforcement, ODNR, and professionals. Their willingness to volunteer their time to our science fair serves as an example of the strong school-community partnership we have worked to establish and reinforces that such partnerships contribute to the success of our school, students and community!
A huge thank you goes out to our PTO for their support as well! Our PTO consists of dedicated members that are always willing to lend their support and time to our school and students. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this event. They provided their time and refreshments. They also provided Mr. Kostiha with the funds to purchase participation medals, trophies and judge appreciation gifts.
Congratulations to all of our students that participated in this event! The science fair is just one example of our dedication to the community and what makes the education of our students a great success!
