Role Models speak for
Burton Elementary D.A.R.E. Students
This week, several students took time out of their busy high school lives to come down to Burton Elementary for a visit. Officer Roy Lundstrum was looking for some special teens who could talk to the 5th and 6th graders about how their lives will change when they move on up to the middle school.
David Young, Liz Hess, Rachel Taylor, and Alley Rohaley discussed many topics with the students including classes, teachers, friends, and how to handle the stress of homework and making their classes on time. They also discussed whether any of the students knew anyone who had tried drugs. They all admitted that they did, but that they’d never seen any drugs. On occasion, when the drug dogs visit to search lockers, the students hear them barking, and all the students whisper among themselves about who might be in trouble.
They also talked about how drugs and alcohol could make people’s personalities change which also can make them hard to talk to. They talked about how much fun it is being in sports and activities, and how it is so important to do all that homework because if the grades drop too much, students can be kicked off the teams.
I really enjoyed listening to these students share so openly. I think the younger students learned a lot and the sixth graders especially probably found out the answers to many of their worries about next year!!! Thanks so much David, Rachel, Liz, and Alley!
