The Berkshire Biology Club Receives Honors

by Carey Kuchenbecker/Maske

March 11, 2008

On Monday, March 3rd, the Berkshire Biology Club ( BBC) members, Ethan Teare, David Young, Brendan Curtin, Sara Koth, Sarah Mayer and  Miss K, were honored to give a presentation at the Ohio Digital Commons on Education (ODCE)conference in Columbus, Ohio. The two-day conference consisted of many 1-hour presentations by college faculty and technology vendors. Eric Fingerhut, the chancellor of Ohio Board of Regents, was the keynote speaker. The BBC’s presentation focused on learning science in the traditional classroom setting vs. kinesthetic learning in the field. The students gave a 20 minute power point, then took participants on a “field trip” to an indoor 20ft x 4 ft mock stream to exhibit both types of learning.

The BBC was chosen to participate based on their studies in Igniting Streams of Learning at Hiram College this past summer. Together with Hiram College, Kent State and Akron University, the BBC is trying to change the way we teach science in Ohio.
