A Visitor From Japan
by Tanya Klingman
February 25, 2008
Last week the 2nd grade classes at Burton Elementary had a visitor. Mrs. Holschuh's granddaughter lives in Japan. Her second grade class at Lanham Elementary read the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. This book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished, "as flat as a pancake" when a bulletin board falls on him. Stanley becomes very flat, but is otherwise fine. The story tells how Stanley discovers the advantages of being flat. He can slide under doors, go down sidewalk grates, and even fold himself up small enough to fit into an envelope and be mailed to California for an exciting vacation.
Ms.
Diekman's Second Grade Class from Japan sent out their own version
of Flat Stanley, called Flat Midori. They sent their
Midori Dolls all over the United States and the World. Mrs.
Holschuh was selected to be a host family and after a short visit
Flat Midori will be sent back to Japan. She will share her
travels with Ms. Diekman's class. When Flat Midori came to
visit our classes at Burton Elementary she brought a picture of
herself and a letter for each student. The students in second
grade at Burton Elementary hope Flat Midori enjoyed her visit to
Burton, Ohio. We hope she has a safe return to Japan.
