First Grade Students Love the Language Calendar
By: Jennifer S. Chase, Berkshire Elementary: Burton Campus
The first grade students at the Burton Campus love working with our language calendar. It is hung just above our conventional calendar in the front of our classroom. Our language calendar consists of five spots that display the morning messages for every day of the week. The morning messages are marked with all sorts of curious symbols.
Each day the students help to create the morning message that is added to our language calendar. Then the students have to tell me what is “special” about the morning message. The kids apply their knowledge of grammar, capitalization, punctuation, blends, diagraphs etc. to convey to me what is “special” about the morning message. I use the symbols and special markings to highlight the “special” things the kids found in the message. The language calendar has been an awesome tool. It is amazing how quickly the kids catch onto the language rules. They love to raise their hand and get involved!
