A “Music Man” Visits Second Grade

Children in Mrs. Park’s second grade class have been studying light and sound.  During their study of sound, they discussed what makes sound.  They went on a “listening walk” which afterward generated some lively discussion. They were able to complete sound experiments using items such as rubber bands, beakers with water, and tuning forks.  They also had the opportunity to hear many types of musical “sounds” when a very special visitor came to the classroom.

Mr. Stuart Park (yes, Mrs. Park’s husband!) took time out of his day last Friday and brought a variety of instruments that the Park family have around their home.  The children were very interested and attentive as they listened to Mr. Park explain how vibrations work to make the sounds that come from the various instruments.  He discussed volume and pitch and demonstrated each on his instruments.  He brought a violin and a guitar to represent the string family.  He brought a cornet and a baritone to represent the brass family, and he brought a snare drum to represent the percussion family.  He played many songs—student-selected songs as well as a lovely Mozart piece he played on his baritone.  When he was done with his demonstration, each child had the opportunity to try the violin, guitar, and snare drum if they wanted.

Who knows?  Perhaps there will be a future “Music Man” or “Music Woman” in the group!  We want to thank Mr. Park for sharing his talent and time to help us better understand sound!
