Working with partners with a number memory game.

Number Exploration

leads to mathemeticians!

by Mary Jo Maxwell

February 05, 2008

Students in Mrs. Maxwell's kindergarten class recently used number cards to increase their fluency with numerals.  The students cut out cards with the numerals 1-20 on them.  Working individually, they ordered these cards from smallest to largest.  Students who were able to do that activity fluently were challenged to order them from largest to smallest.

A student ordering his numbers from 1-20

After working on their own and having a teacher check their progress, they began checking for one another.  This allowed a peer tutoring opportunity, as students that were more comfortable with the activity worked with students that may have been having difficulty.  To cap off the afternoon fun, they students paired up in teams and played a number concentration game.  They combined their number cards and played like the old fashioned memory game, finding pairs and counting up to see how many pairs each student had at the end.

Cooperative learning among the students

This activity was one of the many found in our Everyday Math Series.  The series provides many games and activities that get the kids thinking mathematically while keeping their attention because it is FUN!
