A well rounded high school education includes the study of a foreign language. It provides insight and knowledge to a culture other than a student’s own. At Berkshire Junior Senior High School, two foreign languages are offered: French and Spanish. Within the next several weeks, the Honor Societies of both languages are hosting two separate fundraisers. Each fundraiser will be available to the high school student body.
The French Honor Society fundraiser is one annually offered by the club. The members of the society clean snow and ice off of Berkshire High School’s faculty and staff’s cars for a donation. It costs either $1.00 per day, or $4.00 per week. All of the money donated goes to supporting the activities of the French Honor Society, which include the induction ceremony.
“This fundraiser is an opportunity for students to participate in a service to raise funds to support French Honor Society,” said Mr. John Savage, Berkshire’s French teacher and advisor to the FHS. The cleaning of the cars occurs during seventh period. “All the money we raise is helpful because we are a newly reinstated club after last year’s budget cuts,” said French Honor Society president Claire Markwardt.
The Spanish Honor Society fundraiser is geared more towards the student body. Every Friday, starting the 18th and going through February, members of the Spanish Honor Society will sell hot chocolate to the students, teachers, and staff in the morning before school. “Most everybody likes hot chocolate. The school can get really cold, and it’s cheaper than the Coffee Shop,” said Spanish Honor Society co-president Amanda Koehn.
The price of a cup of hot chocolate is $1.00. It is uncertain exactly how the money raised will be spent, but two possibilities are being discussed. The first idea is to sponsor a child in a Spanish speaking country. The second possibility is for the Spanish Honor Society to teach Spanish to an elementary class, most likely at Burton Elementary. Each possibility is meant to provide a positive experience for a young child.
Both clubs want to thank all who participate in their fundraisers.
