Attention Parents of 19-20 Kindergarten, 7th and 12th Graders: Immunization Updates are Due at these Grades

By Kathy Pinkava, RN,  Berkshire School Nurse

Our predominantly well-immunized Berkshire students are an asset to the health of our families, schools and our community as a whole.

There are immunization updates recommended by physicians and required by Ohio Law to protect against specific diseases at the start of Kindergarten, 7th and 12th Grades.

These requirements should be completed and a current immunization record provided to the your student’s school by the first day of school in August.

At Kindergarten, the initial childhood series to protect against Hepatitis B, Polio, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (chickenpox) are due to be completed. This information is provided to parents at Kindergarten registration.

7th Graders need a dose of Tdap to boost Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis protection and a dose of Meningococcal vaccine to protect against bacterial Meningitis. Letters with information about the requirement and whether the vaccines are currently on file at school were sent home in current Sixth Graders’ purple folders on April 18th.

Seniors need to have a dose of Meningococcal vaccine on or after their 16th birthday. This would be a second dose for many students. Letters with information about this requirement and the current record at school will be distributed to Juniors at school on April 29th.

I am happy to answer questions or provide additional information.
