As a way to further enhance the values, ideas and lessons thematically presented in the timeless teen novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, students in Berkshire’s English Language Arts class recently conducted a mock-trial, to fictitiously place one of the book’s main characters on the stand, in a courtroom setting. Specifically, students were required to prepare for this mock-trial by researching the facts of the case, understanding precedent, creating opening and closing statements and planning to question witnesses. Students in the class were divided into various groups who would conduct their own mock-trials, while Superintendent Stoddard served as a Mock-Judge along with Mr. Hiscox and others who comprised the legal team, bailiffs and jury. Incorporating this mock-trial created a courtroom dynamic to help further student learning from a Project-Based standpoint. Thank you to the members of the community who participated, the students for doing such a fine job in this setting and Kaila Turovsky for her leadership with this idea. An effective learning experience was shared by all.
