Mrs. Stouffer's kindergarten kids jumped right into the swing of things as they started off the year completing a design challenge. Their challenge was to create a volcano. The kids were placed in partners or small groups to collaborate while they worked through numerous problems that arose throughout their challenge.
After building their volcanos, the kids used blocks to measure the height of their volcanos. Next, they compared the height of their volcano with the other groups and put them in order from the tallest volcano to the shortest. The children also completed 1-1 correspondence activities, created a word web listing all of the materials used, presented their volcanos to their peers, and worked on politely critiquing one another. The critiques were then used to revamp their volcanos. This activity led to so many more wonderful extensions.
