Students from Burton Elementary competed in the annual Science Olympiad at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, March 4. Seventeen of our students placed throughout the day. Students returned after a long day of competing with 2nd place medals for Evania McCandless and Mia Pirichy in Crime Busters, 3rd place medals for Chelsey Hare and Caeley Powell in Mystery Design and 5th place medals for Vicky Spanos and Brooklyn Pope in Circuit Wizardry.
Beyond that, however, students placed in several other events earning 6th place in What Went By (Abbi Connors and Lanie Wadsworth), Tree Identification (Marissa Tiber and Jordyn Wichert), and Ready-Aim-Fire (Sophia Laudato and Keaton Silva), 8th place in Bird Identification (Sidney Schaden and Jordyn Wichert) and Disease Detectives (Evania McCandless and Marissa Tiber), and a 9th place in Bridge Building (Miles Miller and Louis Filby).
Burton Elementary competed against very large schools, some of which have STEM instruction as part of their regular daily schedule. Above all, the kids had so much fun all day. In some cases, students filled in without any preparation for events that were unfilled or needed students to compete and still they enjoyed and placed!
Advisor Mrs. Amy Hochschild is excited for next year, and looks forward to creating a committee to help students have even more fun with these events. She is hoping to have parents, teachers, board members and administrators join in; 25 events is a lot of adventures to explore! Let's share that fun!
